About the event

The St Louis PSL and Dissonant Works invite you to kick off Black August with a screening of the Academy award-nominated documentary A Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat on Saturday, August 8th at 5PM. As African nations gained independence in the 20th century, the scourge of capitalism and Western imperialism persisted with no exception in the Congo. As Patrice Lumumba led the struggle for Congolese independence, CIA efforts to destabilize their revolution were underway. The Western-backed overthrow of Patrice Lumumba drew the attention of several musicians like Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach, culminating in their protest of the February 1961 United Nations Security Council meeting. The film begs the question: how does art serve power, especially as it pertains to the Black American struggle for liberation?
