Above the sound.
My most recent works seek to invite synesthetic exploration by interpreting emotional themes in vast colorscapes. Engaging with the memory of water and using its form to manipulate texture and layer evocative hues allows me to create a variety of experiences that feel uncertain, yet familiar. Above the sound. is an atmospheric collection intended to reflect the thinning veil over the collective.
- Mary Eden Dissonant Works Spring|Summer Artist in Residence
Our collaboration.
Created over the past two months at Dissonant Works, this series began with six blank canvases and evolved in full view of visitors to the space. The works remained in progress on the gallery walls, offering a unique opportunity to witness the creative process as it unfolded.

Untitled (from the turnpike)
Summers when I was a kid were spent visiting kin in Texas. Staring out the window on the road to anywhere seemed to take up so much of my time back then. I would relish in the scenery, imagine dipping my toes in distant creeks or appearing in the tree tops, watching everything like a cat. I would imagine staring back at myself in that car, from far away, wondering where I was going, if I didn’t know me. This painting reminisces on those moments in the car, just before it gets dark. A far away place that looks like it moves a lot during the day.

In sleep, I’m often drifting over great waves of color in a field that is beyond emotion. It is only understanding, presence, thereness. For this piece, I have attempted to translate a frame of this interaction. The observer’s perspective of this curious horizon feels closer than the details want to allow. The places in between the colors invite us to muse. Why do some things feel so familiar?

Andromeda
I see a mountain and imagine if its reflection were undisturbed, what one might feel in its shadow. Set in another time, Andromeda recalls iterations of existences only fabled on our plane. This may resonate with the traveler.

at the lake
This evocative cloudscape is set over a mysterious body of water. From a Jungian view pertaining to the psychology of dreams, a dark and solemn lake might suggest suppressed inner knowing or the unexplored subconscious mind. I enjoy that imagery very much, and would love to add that the overwhelming feature of the lake at this moment is the reflection. We only see the light on the surface, or so we think. But I want to challenge the onlooker to recognize that when we observe attentively and with patience, we see the light permeates the body. The lake is luminous. And perhaps that does speak to the beauty and discomfort of integration.

From under a tree, with scattered fruit remains, I remember looking past the hill for so long that time seemed to stop moving. I can smell the dust and earth under my feet. I wonder when the next rain is coming. A song plays in my mind, and I think about how often I still hear it.

I once saw a storm that produced these shades of green in the sky I’d never seen before. It was terrifying, but I became enamoured of the weather. I recreated this scene by blocking out the bottom completely in black and washing the pale green over the sky. Using dense-body custom mixtures allows me to illuminate prismatic detail with extreme dilution - the colors that comprise the shades begin to separate just slightly as they dry, which brings these gradients to life.
